Kora Joins IATA payment gateway to connect airlines to Africa

Kora, a Nigerian payment infrastructure company, has joined the IATA Financial Gateway, the airline industry's payment orchestration platform operated by the International Air Transport Association, which represents more than 370 international airlines globally. The integration gives airlines and travel agencies that use the gateway access to Kora's African payment infrastructure without building separate connections to local payment systems across individual markets.

The practical problem the connection addresses has persisted since global airlines began expanding into African markets: local payment rails vary by country, foreign exchange management adds operational complexity, settlement systems are disconnected from each other, and maintaining relationships with multiple payment providers across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt and South Africa requires significant ongoing management overhead. A single IFG connection now routes to Kora's full stack, covering cards, bank transfers, mobile money and local alternative payment methods, with settlement and local compliance handled at the infrastructure level.

Dickson Nsofor, CEO of Kora, described the commercial framing behind the partnership: "Africa is not a market to figure out later. It is a growth opportunity that demands serious infrastructure today. Our partnership with IATA signals that the rails are ready. Global airlines no longer have to choose between expanding into Africa and managing payment complexity. With Kora inside IFG, they get both."

Kamil Al-Awadhi, Regional Vice President for Africa and Middle East at IATA, described the gateway's purpose and what Kora's participation changes for airlines operating on the continent: "IATA Financial Gateway enables increased travel payment processing flexibility for the world's airlines and travel suppliers to build a cost-effective travel payment strategy. Kora's participation strengthens our ability to serve airlines operating in or expanding across African markets."

The aviation context gives the integration a specific growth backdrop. Africa is projected to add more than 300 million new air passengers by 2050, a figure the industry has cited to support infrastructure investment across the continent.
