South Africa’s Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration has launched a WhatsApp chatbot that allows workers and employers to submit complaints, refer cases and receive updates on active matters through the messaging platform.
The new service is available around the clock and can be accessed by sending “Hello” to 060 224 2437. Users are then presented with a menu of available services, including case referrals, status enquiries and access to information about CCMA processes.
The rollout follows comments made by CCMA CIO Nkosikhona Nkosi last year that the organisation was exploring WhatsApp as a way to improve access to its services. The agency says the chatbot is intended to shorten response times and make it easier for users to interact with the commission without visiting a physical office.
CCMA director Mpumelelo Nconco described the launch as part of a broader effort to modernise the organisation’s case management and stakeholder engagement systems.
“The roll out of the WhatsApp chatbot is a significant milestone in our digital transformation journey. By moving our services onto a platform already used by millions of South Africans every day, we are removing barriers to access and bringing the CCMA closer to the people we serve,” said Nconco.
A key part of the transition is the planned phase-out of the CCMA Connect mobile app, which was previously used for tracking the status of referrals. The organisation says WhatsApp will become the primary digital channel for those functions.
The commission believes the change could be particularly useful for vulnerable workers, including farm workers and domestic workers, who may have limited access to dedicated mobile applications or desktop services.
Nconco said the organisation is focusing on communication channels that users already know and use regularly.
“WhatsApp is a popular messaging platform used by many people, including vulnerable workers, therefore our intention goes beyond dispute resolution,” he said.
The move reflects a wider trend among public sector organisations in South Africa to use widely adopted consumer messaging platforms to deliver government and administrative services, rather than requiring citizens to install separate applications.
