Zoho Corporation, a privately held technology company headquartered in Austin, Texas, with its international headquarters in Chennai, India, that develops more than 55 business applications under the Zoho and ManageEngine brands, has unveiled Nathu La, a server platform designed and built entirely by the company's own engineering team. The hardware is based on Intel Xeon 6 processors and was developed in collaboration with Intel. Zoho says the platform delivers equivalent performance to comparable servers at 12 to 18 percent lower power consumption and 20 to 30 percent lower total cost of ownership.
The server's development reflects a longer effort by Zoho to control more of its own technology infrastructure. Shailesh Davey, CEO of Zoho Corporation, described the rationale:
"Zoho Corporation has invested in building its own technology stack from the ground up over the last three decades. The Nathu La server launch is in line with that goal. With Zoho's strategy of using contextual, right-sized models, running on our own platform, now on our own servers, accelerated by our own GPU database, we are compounding the benefits accrued from owning and operating our entire technology stack. These long-term R&D investments we are making at every layer of the stack are aimed at delivering customer value and ensuring that our solutions are more sustainable and accessible for businesses than the competition."
Zoho plans to host its own applications on the Nathu La platform, which the company says will allow it to optimize software and hardware together for specific workloads and reduce inference costs for AI applications. The design follows Open Compute Project principles, with an emphasis on modularity, thermal efficiency and maintainability.
The engineering team behind Nathu La was established in Nagpur in 2020. The team developed a custom motherboard and chassis platform over five years, covering hardware, firmware and systems management. Key components include customized power delivery subsystems, an in-house DC-SCM (Data Centre Secure Control Module), and modular chassis options designed for different deployment environments. The Network Interface Card was also designed internally. All modular components are assembled by Indian Electronic Manufacturing Services partners. Zoho has filed more than five patents covering thermal management and server architecture designs related to the project.
Part of the Nagpur team was recruited through SETU, an initiative Zoho describes as Student's Engagement for Transformative Upskilling, a program that trains engineering students from colleges across Central India with a focus on Electronics System Design and Manufacturing. More than 300 students have been trained through SETU, some of whom have joined Zoho directly. The program is structured around hands-on engineering work rather than AI-assisted learning tools, which Zoho identified as a concern in technical education.
Davey addressed the talent development dimension directly:
"The development of the Nathu La server reflects our commitment to creating complex technology powered by talent from smaller towns and villages. Through focused investments in R&D and skill development, this foray into hardware enables us not only to build and own the technology, but also to cultivate the expertise and talent behind it."
Because all intellectual property in the Nathu La platform is owned by Zoho and developed domestically, the company says the server has no dependency on foreign entities for security audits, firmware updates or licensing. The platform is aligned with India's Local Content Policy for government procurement and supports the country's Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan and National Supercomputing Mission initiatives.
