ArcelorMittal brings AWS Cloud and AI tools to steel production floors

ArcelorMittal, a steelmaking company that operates production sites in 14 countries, has entered into a collaboration with Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing division of Amazon, to bring cloud, AI and edge computing tools directly into its manufacturing operations. The collaboration covers converging parts of the company's operational technology and information technology systems onto AWS infrastructure, extending cloud and AI capabilities to the edge of its production environments.

Using AWS services across industrial IoT, real-time sensor data and machine learning, ArcelorMittal plans to deploy AI tools at the point of production, including predictive maintenance for equipment, computer-vision-based quality control, process optimization and digital twins of its physical assets and production lines. As part of the collaboration, AWS will also design and deliver an education program aimed at building digital and AI skills across ArcelorMittal's global workforce.

Separately from the cloud and AI work, Amazon has entered into a multi-year Supply Framework Agreement with ArcelorMittal covering structural steel supply across Europe and the United Kingdom. Under that agreement, ArcelorMittal will supply XCarb steel, a lower-carbon steel product, for use in Amazon's operations facilities and AWS data centers, supporting Amazon's stated goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Tanuja Randery, Managing Director and Vice President for EMEA at AWS, described the scope of the deployment:

"ArcelorMittal is rethinking how steelmaking works, from predictive maintenance on furnaces and other industrial installations, to AI-driven energy optimisation. By bringing AI to the point of production, they are creating new ways of running safer, more efficient operations across steelmaking sites in 14 countries. We are delighted to work with customers who think at this level, and AWS is proud to support ArcelorMittal's ambition with cloud, edge, and AI technology built for industrial scale."

Nik Puri, Group CIO and CISO at ArcelorMittal, framed the deployment around connecting plant-level operations to a single technology platform:

"The next frontier of digital transformation for steel is on the plant floor. With AWS, we are bringing cloud and AI directly to the point of production, connecting our assets and building plants that sense, learn and optimise in real time. By converging our operational and information technology on a single secure platform, we are moving to digitally enabled operations: safer for our people, more reliable in output, and more sustainable by design. This is how we industrialise AI at scale across the steelmaking value chain."
